Mock Ofsted Inspections & Quality Audits
Inspections can feel daunting, especially when you know there are gaps but you are not sure how serious they are. Our mock Ofsted inspections and quality audits give you an honest, supportive view of where you stand, so you can act before the inspector arrives. We focus on how things work in practice day to day, not just what is written in policies.
Why book a mock inspection?
Providers typically come to us when:
- A first full Ofsted inspection is approaching for a new home or supported accommodation service.
- A previous Ofsted inspection has raised concerns or requirements and they want to check progress.
- Leadership has changed and the Responsible Individual wants assurance about current quality and compliance.
A mock inspection helps you to:
- Understand how your home or service is likely to be experienced and judged.
- Identify strengths to build on and risks or shortfalls to address.
- Prioritise improvement work and prepare staff and managers for inspection activity.
Our mock Ofsted inspection service
We offer realistic, inspection‑style reviews tailored to children’s homes and supported accommodation.
1. Pre‑visit information review
Before visiting, we usually ask for key documents such as:
- Statement of Purpose and, where relevant, supported accommodation service description.
- Recent Regulation 44 reports and any Regulation 45 quality of care reviews.
- Latest Ofsted inspection reports, if available.
- Staffing structure, rotas and training matrix.
- Key policies related to safeguarding, behaviour support, missing from care and complaints.
This helps us understand your context and focus the visit on the areas that matter most.
2. On‑site mock inspection
A typical visit includes:
- A walkthrough of the premises, looking at environment, safety, privacy and homeliness.
- Sampling of children’s/young people’s files, risk assessments, daily logs and incident records.
- Review of records relating to safeguarding, missing episodes, physical interventions, complaints, and management oversight.
- Discussions with the Registered Manager, Responsible Individual and key staff.
- Where appropriate and agreed, speaking with children and young people about their experiences.
We structure our approach around relevant regulations, quality standards and inspection frameworks, mirroring the way an inspector will triangulate evidence.
3. Feedback and written report
At the end of the visit we provide:
- Verbal feedback to the manager and, where possible, the Responsible Individual.
- A written report summarising what we saw, heard and read, highlighting:
- Key strengths in care, culture and leadership.
- Shortfalls and risks, with clear references to expectations.
- Priority actions and recommended timescales.
You can use this report to shape your improvement plan and to evidence learning and governance.
Themed quality audits
Not every service needs a full mock inspection. Sometimes a focused look at specific areas is more useful.
We offer themed audits such as:
- Safeguarding and child protection – referrals, thresholds, records and management oversight.
- Missing from care and exploitation – patterns, return interviews, disruption plans and partnership working.
- Behaviour support and physical intervention – de‑escalation, recording, debriefs and analysis.
- Recording quality – care plans, keywork, risk assessments and daily logs.
- Staffing, supervision and training – safer recruitment, induction, ongoing development and supervision quality.
Each audit results in a concise report with findings, good practice examples and targeted recommendations.
Linking to Regulation 44 and Regulation 45
Mock inspections and audits should complement, not duplicate, your existing quality systems.
We can help you:
- Use Regulation 44 visit findings and Regulation 45 quality of care reviews as part of your mock inspection planning.
- Ensure themes identified in independent reports are reflected in your internal improvement work.
- Demonstrate a clear line of governance and learning from front‑line practice through to Responsible Individual oversight.
Where we also act as your Regulation 44 independent person, we keep the roles clearly separated and transparent so independence is maintained.
How we work with you
We aim for mock inspections and audits to feel challenging but supportive:
- We are open about our methodology and what we will look at.
- We explain our findings in plain language and avoid unnecessary jargon.
- We focus on what will make the biggest difference to children and young people, not on cosmetic changes.
You can choose:
- A one‑off mock inspection, for example before a full inspection.
- An annual or twice‑yearly programme of mock inspections and audits.
- A combination of a full mock inspection one year and themed audits the next.
